Farewell to Michigan Herb Associates

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Carol Bechtol

After a lengthy discussion at the November MHA Board meeting, it was decided to cancel the 2019 MHA Conference and wind down the organization by the end of the current fiscal year (May 31, 2019). Any funds remaining at that time will be donated to the Michigan 4-H
Children’s Garden as stipulated in the organization’s by-laws. We have been making changes over the past few years to reduce our costs and increase our outreach, expand our membership and encourage more attendance at our annual conference. Despite our best efforts, our numbers have not been increasing to the point they no longer support the annual conference and The Michigan Herb Journal. All of us who serve on the Board are so sad to see MHA come to an end, as I’m sure many of you are as well.

But that doesn’t mean the mission of MHA has to come to an end. We can all carry on the legacy of “Each One, Teach One” through our individual efforts in our little corners of the world. What could be more fun than starting an herb garden with your children and grandchildren?
Or maybe you can volunteer to do a program for your local garden club about herbs. And don’t forget to take something savory and flavorful to your next family gathering or potluck that highlights one of your favorite culinary herbs.

Over the years we have all enjoyed the food we’ve tasted, the friendships we’ve cultivated and the fun we’ve had with MHA, not to mention all we’ve learned about growing and using herbs! We can each continue these things in our personal lives and share our love of everything herbal with those around us.

It should be no surprise that the 4-H Children’s Garden will miss MHA. As an organization, we have been constant supporters for over 30 years; we have provided over $100,000 to the development and expansion of the garden. That doesn’t have to stop. Donations can be
made to the garden through the Michigan 4-H Foundation website (www.mi4hfdtn.org).  (See sidebar for direct link.) Click on the “Give to 4-H” button, then choose the “Funds to Support” link and select “Giving to 4-H Children’s Garden.” Under the Dollar Amount list, be sure to set the Designation to the 4-H Children’s Garden.

If we all pass on our knowledge and love of herbs in our families; in our local herb groups; with our friends and in our communities, the legacy of MHA can continue for many years to come.

A very fond farewell to you all,
Carol Bechtol
President
